Boomer Trends information on Cholesterol Disorders
When there is too much cholesterol (a fat-like substance) in your blood, it builds up on the walls of your ateries. Over time, this buildup causes "hardening of the arteries" so that arteries become narrowed and blood flow to the heart is slowed down or blocked.
High Cholesterol itself does not cause symptoms, so many people are unaware that their level is too high. To determine your Blood Cholesterol levels, you should have a blood test (after 9-12 hour fast) providing what is called a "lipoprotien profile" which will indicate:
  • Total Cholesterol
  • LDL (Bad) Cholesterol - the main source of cholesterol buildup and blockage of the arteries
  • HDL (Good) Cholesterol - helps keep cholesterol from building up in the arteries
  • Tryglicerides - another form of fat in your blood.

A number of studies have shown that reducing LDL and total cholesterol levels and boosting HDL levels have improved survival and prevented heart attacks in people with or without heart disease.
